The Great Waddle of Worcester

Earlier this year I was delighted to learn that my design for the Wild in Art Waddle of Worcester made the shortlist of 100 designs (out of around 350 entries) and subsequently the final 40. Readers may remember the giraffe and elephant sculpture trails around our city in previous years. Each sculpture is sponsored by a business and individually designed by an artist. At the end of the summer the sculptures are auctioned to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice. This year 40 large penguins waddle into Worcester along with 40 penguin chicks decorated by school children and community organisations.

Working on the sculpture was quite a challenge as I’ve only ever worked on flat surfaces before and there was a lot of curvy penguin to cover! The design had to stay secret until the big reveal on 22 July. My penguin, Blossom, is number 25 on the art trail, a prime riverside location. You can pick up a trail map from the Tourist Info or from the Penguin Shop in Crowngate. You can also download an app from the Waddle of Worcester website. I’m looking forward to doing the whole trail with my granddaughters in August!

My penguin’s sponsor is Prime plc, the health and care property developer based just around the corner from St Richard’s Hospice. In late April, Nici Stride, Prime’s Digital Marketing Manager visited my studio to view the the penguin and take a few photos for promotion nearer the time. I’ve also visited Prime to help out with three miniature penguin painting sessions for their employees.
